Paracetamol gives asthma? Review on Paracetamol

It has recently just became the hot topic in the medical world! But does paracetamol give cancer?

Researchers have found that children who are given paracetamol products such as Calpol are more likely to develop asthma by pre-school

According to academics at the University of Copenhagen, the more of this medicine that children are given in their first year, the more likely they are to develop bad breathing problems.

This concern appears even more evident when you look at the study published in the Journal  of Allergy and Clinical Immunology 

On the bright side....

Doctors are saying that it doesn't prove cause and effect.

Professor Hans Bisgaard, a senior researcher, said paracetamol should only be used by parents when absolutely necessary i.e a child with a high temperature - but he went on to say "We would like to stress that the use of the drug indeed is beneficial in the appropriate circumstances."

Furthermore...

He and his colleagues looked at 336 children from birth to the ages of seven, monitoring their health. With all the children having asthmatic mothers, this meant that they themselves had a higher risk than normal of developing asthma.

By 3 years old, '19% of them had asthma-like symptoms', however those with more paracetamol as a baby had a higher chance of displaying these signs. 

'Specifically, for each doubling of the number of days in which paracetamol was administered, there was a 28% increase in asthma risk by 3 years of age'

But ultimately, the researches pointed out that the babies that ended up developing cancers were simply just 'sicker babies' meaning that they needed that paracetamol more frequently.
